Google Fiber Information

Google Fiber had a representative come out to speak with the Board yesterday and I wanted to pass on some good information that we received.

Timeline
The first milestone is the October 13 sign-up deadline.  The representative made it clear that if someone doesn't sign-up for Google Fiber by October 13 then they will not be able to sign-up for some time.  This will likely be months, but he couldn't commit to any exact timeline.

The next milestone is when they start construction. This date isn't an exact date, but we were told November is the earliest we should expect construction to begin.

As for when you'll actually be able to use your Google Fiber, that date is of course dependent on when construction actually starts.  From there it will take a number of weeks to complete construction in the entire neighborhood.  It wasn't clear if folks we be able to start using their Fiber as construction completes on their street or if we'll need to wait on the entire neighborhood.

Construction
There was a lot of detail on construction and I'll try to boil that down.  Basically, they will be cutting through the road/curb to run fiber throughout the neighborhood.  They'll use a "saw" to cut about 8 inches deep right where the concrete curb meets the street – they refer to this as microtrenching.  From there they will run fiber from the street into yards.  Instead of the little poles that AT&T uses Google will place what they call vaults underground and you'll have some sort of box or pipe cover like you see around your water meter.  There will likely be one vault for every two households.  The next step will be to run fiber from that vault to your house and install what they refer to as a fiber-jack inside your home.  The outsourced construction company will place door hangers 36-48 hours before construction starts.  The process of microtrenching will require the curb to be coned off.  Construction should only occur between 7am – 7pm and on Saturdays.  During this time you will not have access to street parking.  You will still have access to street parking overnight.
